Abstract:

The particularities of semantics of the adjective красный (red) in the dialects became the subject of research. On the bases of the abundant material included in the electronic database of “the Arkhangelsk Region Dictionary”, the semantic particularities of this adjective are compared in the dialectal and literary language. According to the research, many archaic meanings, which existed in the Old Russian language, are retained in the dialect; furthermore, the parlance represents far more meanings of the said adjective than the literary language. The adjectives белый (white) and красный (red) appear as the potential synonyms in the parlances, and, to the contrary, белый (white) and черный (black) enter into far more antonymic oppositions in comparison with the literary language.
