DATA ANALYSIS SOFTWARE (STATISTICAL PACKAGES) IN VERSE STUDY
Abstract:
An important type of computer software — statistical packages for data analysis — is described. Statistical packages provide the possibility for statistical calculations, convenient data representation, application of graphical methods, performing statistical forecasts and many other operations, covered by the concept “data analysis”. Beginning with A. N. Kolmogorov’s works statistics is widely applied in verse study. Even not very sophisticated statistical investigations presuppose a considerable amount of routine calculations which are time-consuming and contain high risk of mistakes if done by hand. To avoid considerable loss of time and improve the reliability of results statistical packages should be used. The concise description and characteristics of available software of this type, basic methods of work are described taking on of the popular statistical packages as an example, data structure and requirements to the input data are thoroughly described, the access to the most often used procedures of statistical analysis, examples of solution of classical statistical problems in the field of verse study. Three examples of application of Pearson chi-squared test in verse study are as follows: 1) for checking of the hypothesis of statistical independence of semistichs in A. S. Pushkin’s “Boris Godunov”; 2) for testing of hypothesis of homogeneity of frequencies of rhythmical forms in models of Taranovsky and Kolmogov-Prokhorov and goodness-of-fit of frequences of rhythmical forms in the poem of A. S. Pushkin’s poem “Eugeny Onegin” with two theoretical models.
