Abstract:

The article contains three etudes on Slavic etymology. Word-formative and semantic aspects are the most important in the analysis. Essenial results are as follows: it is possible to reconstruct Proto-Slavic *osovъjь (derivative of *osь); in Proto-Slavic there were two homogeneous homonyms *kręčiti I ‘bend, press’ and *kręčiti II ‘pull out, root out’ (the latter being a derivative of *kręčь / * krękъ ‘stump, log’); the primary motivation of Proto-Slavic *kъrkъ ‘neck, the back of head, nech, back’ was ‘turning, bending’ (derivative of I.-E. *(s)ker-k- ‘turn, bend’) and the motivaton ‘knotty, hard’ is secondary, as a result of recent association with *kъrčiti sę ‘writhe’ и *kъrknti sę ‘harden’.
